Pianist, guest maestro come with ups, downs

The Columbus Symphony gave their best performance under the leadership of their guest conductor Adreas Delfs at “Classical 5” concert which was held at house full Ohio Theatre. With two very famous works combined with an unfamiliar piece, the program was filled with potential pitfalls. Andreas Delf who is a native of Germany with his vast experience expertly avoided most of these pitfalls making a strong impression on the audience of Ohio Theatre.
CSO premiere, Roberto Sierra’s Fandangos which contained terrific flute and percussion had audience enthralled, many wondering was it all for real. It also had various references from Carmen. But still few found performance as too slow and loud which wasn’t a welcome combination at all. Guest artist Andre Watts who is star of stage and concert hall gave a solo performance with Beethoven’s Piano Concert No 5 “The Emperor”. Watts’s reading was found to be uneven and has disturbance in a background due to a patron’s hearing aid machine. The best music came from theatrical soloist of the third movement.
Columbus Symphony has Brahms Second Symphony listed prominently in their history. It’s to be noted that it was one of the works that was performed in 2001 at the orchestra’s Carnegie Hall appearance. The reading was very different and cannot be called as a historic rendition but still it was enjoyable and valid interpretation.
